Deep Space Nine is a space station near the planet Bajor that was built by the Cardassians during their occupation of Bajor. After Bajorans win their independence, they invite the Federation to help administrate the station, which is now renamed Deep Space Nine. The station's commander, Benjamin Sisko, and his Starfleet crew, are tasked with managing the station. Sisko discovers a wormhole in Bajoran space that leads to the unexplored Gamma Quadrant, and the station is moved closer to it. The wormhole is home to powerful, non-corporeal aliens that the Bajorans worship, and Sisko becomes known as their "Emissary." The station becomes a center for exploration, trade, and conflict, with threats coming from various Alpha Quadrant and Gamma Quadrant factions, including the Dominion. The series has story arcs that span episodes and seasons and features interpersonal conflicts among the characters, which sets it apart from its predecessor.
