Spock is a character in the Star Trek media franchise who has appeared in various television series and films. He is a mixed-human and Vulcan who serves as a science officer and first officer on the USS Enterprise, and later becomes the commanding officer of two iterations of the ship. His mixed heritage is an important plot element in many of his appearances. Along with Captain James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Spock is one of the main characters in the original Star Trek series and its films. After retiring from Starfleet, Spock becomes a Federation ambassador, and later becomes involved in an attempt to save Romulus from a supernova, leading him to live out the rest of his life in a parallel timeline. Leonard Nimoy played Spock in the original Star Trek series, the animated series, eight of the Star Trek films, and a two-part episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Multiple actors have played the character within the main continuity of Star Trek, including Ethan Peck, who played Spock as a recurring character in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery and in Star Trek: Short Treks. Zachary Quinto also played an alternate reality version of Spock in the films Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). Nimoy's portrayal of Spock made a significant cultural impact and earned him Emmy Award nominations. He has also appeared in numerous novels, comics, and video games.
Spock, was born to a Vulcan father named Sarek and a human mother named Amanda Grayson. As a child, he faced bullying and discrimination because of his mixed heritage, and had an older half-brother named Sybok. It is later revealed that he also had a human, adopted sister named Michael Burnham. Spock was betrothed to a Vulcan woman named T'Pring during his childhood. Despite his scientific aptitude and support from his father, Spock rejected his acceptance into the Vulcan Science Academy due to discrimination against those who were only partially Vulcan. As a result, he chose to join Starfleet instead, leading to a rift with his father that lasted for 18 years.
Spock plays three-dimensional chess , a variant of the board game chess that was popular among the crew of the USS Enterprise in the 23rd century and continued to be played in the 24th century. It involves the use of a three-dimensional board and is considered to be a more challenging and complex version of traditional chess. According to Spock, the principles of three-dimensional chess are based on mathematics. The game is typically set up with the majority of the black pieces on the secondary level and the majority of the white pieces on the tertiary level.
